Les Indes Galantes

// the Short Film (“The Amorous Indies”)

In 2017, Clément Cogitore directed a short film “Les Indes Galantes” (“The Amorous Indies”) based on the opera by Jean Philippe Rameau that was produced by the platform 3e Scène (3rd Scene) of the Opéra national de Paris (Paris National Opera). The director imagined a possible dialogue between K.R.U.M.P. dancers and Rameau’s baroque music. K.R.U.M.P. is a dance of dissent born out of the Los Angeles ghettos during the early 2000s. For Clément Cogitore, it was clear he needed to invite the choreographer Bintou Dembélé who, in her work, drew on street dances, but also on the colonial enterprise and the racialized body, to work with him. Together, they conceptualized this film, where earthy and percussive dance sublimely pairs with the music of the opera.
